When to replace carbon monoxide detectors?

Does anyone know when to replace your carbon monoxide detector? I bought mine in 2003 when I purchased my 1st home. We just turned on the heat this week & It got me thinking if its time to replace it or not?

there are 2 types of c/o detectors, one will check the difference in the air quality and the other adds up how much c/o it checks. the only way to know is if you still have the book that came with your detector.
if it has a digital display then you should be ok, if it just has a warning light and sound, then you might want to replace it with a higher quality unit next time that does have a display. they arent very expensive and it could save your life.
